Pedestrian dead after Smithfield train collision near East Market Street, police say

SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WNCN) — Smithfield police are investigating what led to a pedestrian’s death during a Sunday afternoon collision with a train in Johnston County.

According to the Smithfield Police Department, officers reported around 12:30 p.m. Sunday that the collision occurred near the intersection of East Market Street and 9th Street, which is close to the train track bridge over East Market Street vehicle traffic.

Officers told CBS 17 that early reports indicated a man was on the tracks, he was hit by the train and died at the scene.

Railroad tracks in the area are above East Market Street, which provides an underpass for cars and trucks.
