Grenada Building & Loan Association celebrates 100 years!

The Grenada Building and Loan Association (GBLA) proudly celebrates its 100th anniversary on 8 October 2025, since it was registered on 8 October 2925 under the Building Societies Ordinance of 1887 — marking a century of longevity, resilience, home-grown and dedicated service to Grenada.

As Grenada’s oldest indigenous financial institution and lone Building Society, GBLA has stood as a pillar of financial empowerment with a member-oriented focus and as a pioneer in promoting property/home ownership and share investments to Grenadians locally and in the diaspora. A value that remains at the heart of its operations 100 years later.

Founded at a time when access to credit was limited for the average Grenadian, GBLA began as a modest mutual institution, and emerged as a beacon of opportunity and hope for Grenadians seeking to save, invest, and own property. The Association was led at its inception by a group of visionary pioneers whose commitment laid the foundation for what has evolved into a unique and respected financial institution in Grenada.

The founders of the Association were Arnold Williamson, Ronald O Williams, Frank L Gresham and Dr Arnot Steele, all Grenadians. The first offices of the Association were located at Young Street, St George’s, at the Williamson’s Building (now occupied by the Grenada Marketing and National Importing Board). Subsequently, these offices were relocated to Mr John Renwick’s building at Church Street, opposite the St George’s Anglican School, and then to its present location, premises which were purchased from the MacLeish family.

Former Presidents of the Association included Messrs Arnold Williamson, Ronald O Williams, John Renwick and C Walter Coard. Early Directors were Frank L Gresham, Wilfred H Jacobs, E Earle Hughes, A D W Johnson, Dr Arnot Steele, William A Date, Cosmo A St Bernard and Ernest C Wilkinson. The present Board of Directors comprises Ms Deborah St Bernard, President; Mr Andrew Bierzynski, Vice President; Mr John Miller and Mr Adrian Francis.

From its inception in an era very different to the present day, the Association has grown exponentially while navigating significant challenges in our society.  These include political changes, natural disasters, economic downturns and financial challenges.  And yet here we are, truly standing the test of time. 100 years later, the Association continues to operate and fund its activities through investment in local mortgages and deposits.

Over the past century, the Association has helped thousands of Grenadians from all walks of life achieve their dream of home ownership, capitalise on investment opportunities and promote financial independence among its members.

As the Association celebrates its centenary, it does so with a focus on the future. With plans to expand and introduce new and innovative financial products that will meet the needs of the current members today, not forgetting those who have always remained loyal along the way, thereby being committed to its membership and building on its legacy.

On this historic milestone, the Association extends heartfelt thanks to its members, staff and directors, past and present. We also extend our appreciation to the people of Grenada for their unwavering support, confidence and patience. You have all played a crucial role in shaping the journey of Grenada’s lone Building Society. Our journey is your journey, and together, we look forward to shaping another 100 years with our thanks to God.

Congratulations Grenada Building & Loan Association!
