Kerebua Village Plans to Plant 5,000 Tahitian Lime Trees to Boost Food Security and Conservation

The community of Kerebua Village is taking action to rehabilitate fruit trees by planting 5,000 Tahitian lime trees, part of a broader plan to work with nature and safeguard food against the effects of climate change.

Glarinda Andre, Country Manager of Live & Learn Vanuatu, which is supporting the initiative, told VBTC News that community members had been trained, with the help of development partners, to properly manage the Tahitian lime planting.

“The Department of Forest and Agriculture carried out training on soil preparation, nursery management, and how to craft and select Tahitian lime, including how long it takes,” Andre explained.

Turani Lui, Agriculture Development Officer for DARD in West Malo, was responsible for facilitating a three-day workshop on grafting Tahitian lime and teaching local men and women the skills needed to make their plans a success.

The plan of Kerebua villagers  includes planting other fruit trees to improve food preservation and support tourism products in the community conservation area.

Through this work, the village demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable land use, ensuring food security for the future, and creating benefits for the current population and future generations.
