4 arrested in South Street shooting that left 1 man injured – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Four people have been arrested for their roles in a Saturday shooting in downtown Indianapolis that injured one man and peppered several vehicles with gunfire.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were around the 100 block of East South Street in downtown south of Monument Circle around 2:30 a.m. when they heard several shots being fired.

Upon arriving at the scene, police found two vehicles hit by gunfire and located “multiple shell casings of various calibers.”

They did not locate a person shot, but a short time later, a man arrived at a nearby hospital suffering a gunshot wound. Investigators say they believe he was hurt in the South Street shootout. His condition as of Saturday was “stable” or “awake and breathing.”

While still at the scene, IMPD detained two people who they saw “stuffing guns in their waistbands.” There were arrested and later identified as Joshua Vaughn, 30, and Ron Paul, 23.

As investigators started taping the scene, IMPD says a car involved in the shooting pulled into a nearby parking lot. Police tried to get it to stop but the driver refused, speeding through the parking lot and almost hitting the officers.

Officers hopped in their marked vehicles and chased after the car until the pursuit ended in the 1100 block of Shelby Street. Three people inside the car fled on foot, but a passenger, identified as 26-year-old Dajaymeon Cantrell, was taken into custody.

Two other suspects ran away, but one dropped an unlocked cell phone that had directions pulled up for a house.

There, they identified another suspect who ran from the vehicle, identifying him as James Gary Jr., 25. He was taken into custody, as well.

A search of the vehicle found “a firearm, firearm accessories, and evidence of drug dealing.” The gun found in the car matched the caliber shell casings from the South Street scene.

The four men were booked into the Marion County jail on various charges:

  • Vaughn: Arrested on a warrant out of Hamilton County for driving on a suspended license.
  • Paul: 1 count of unlawful carrying of a handgun.
  • Cantrell: 1 count of resisting law enforcement and 1 count of dealing marijuana
  • Gary: 1 count of resisting law enforcement and 1 count of dealing marijuana

Vaughn is the only suspect not currently listed as an inmate.

IMPD says detectives are gathering additional evidence and searching for video footage to determine what led up to the shooting.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the IMPD Aggravated Assault Office at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers.
