Mele Presbyterian Church Celebrates 90 Years of Faith and Community

Mele Village celebrated a historic milestone today — 90 years since the doors of the Presbyterian Church first opened on Sunday, September 29, 1935.

At the heart of the celebrations was Elder Lulu Sobuso, who has been carefully recording Mele’s history for the church, including major community events and even creating resources like numbers 1 to 100 in the Mele language to help students learn. An exhibition of these records was displayed during the event, showcasing the church’s deep connection to both kastom and education.

Elder Sobuso explained that the church has long been a pillar of strength for Mele, providing shelter during earthquakes and cyclones, and continuing to play a central role in family and community life — from weddings and funerals to youth programs and cultural activities.
