Commissioner of Police David Manning announced today the appointment of Anthony Wagambie Jr. as Commander of joint police and defense force counter-terrorism operations in the Highlands region.
The appointment consolidates the increased presence of security forces in the area, a move aimed at protecting innocent men, women, and children.
According to Commissioner Manning, Commander Wagambie’s extensive experience makes him the right person to lead the on-the-ground efforts.
“Commander Wagambie has been tasked with upholding the rule of law, protecting innocent communities, and bringing to justice those who have terrorized the nation,” Manning said.
“The government has declared zero tolerance for these acts, and our security forces are working to meet that objective.”
Commander Wagambie was suspended as the National Capital District and Central Police Commander following the “Black Wednesday” riots in Port Moresby.
The suspension was to allow for a thorough investigation by the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary’s Internal Affairs Directorate into the leadership’s handling of the police protest that led to widespread looting and destruction.
The suspension was initially for 21 days but was extended as the investigation continued.
While suspended, he was assigned to be the Deputy Chief of the Bougainville Police Service, but he chose to take personal time off instead. This is why he was “unattached” from his command duties until his recent appointment.
Further details on this ongoing operation will be released when appropriate.
