HOPE MILLS, N.C. (WNCN) — Deputies in Cumberland County are investigating a threat of “mass violence” involving a high school near Hope Mills, officials said Tuesday evening.

The “potential threat” involved Gray’s Creek High School, just southeast of Hope Mills, according to a Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office news release.

“Our detectives are diligently investigating this matter in cooperation with the school administration. Safety remains our highest priority,” the news release said.

Officials did not release any details about the threat, including a possible timeline.

“Appropriate safety measures have been implemented,” the news release said.

Officials said the public contacted authorities about the matter.

“I sincerely thank everyone who has taken the initiative to notify the sheriff’s office,” Cumberland County Sheriff Johnathan Morgan said.

Deputies said anyone aware of suspicious or threatening behavior should report the matter by calling 911 or contacting the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office at (910) 323-1500.
