Athens taxi drivers to launch an 18-hour strike

Athens taxi drivers will launch an 18-hour strike from Sunday midnight until Monday around 6 p.m. to facilitate drivers and owners to attend the extraordinary general assembly of their union SATA.

The meeting is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 22, 2025.

In a call for participation, the union stressed the “critical and dangerous turning point” they are facing due to the government policies of the  “complete liberalization of the transport sector” that directly threaten:

“The viability of our profession
The financial dignity of thousands of families
The legal operation of the taxi as a public transport service”

Expressing their strong opposition to the entrance of “multinational companies” in their profession they stress that “Multinationals, they are finishing us off.”

“The degradation of our role and the uncontrolled entry of large private interests into the transport sector is not a distant scenario – it is already underway with the blessings of the government.”

Taxi drivers have launched several 48-hour strikes in the last couple of months, however, the conservative government is deaf to their demand that include more than “the multinationals”.

They threaten with more mobilizations in the near future.
