Traffic restrictions ahead of Zubeen Garg’s final journey

With the mortal remains of singer and actor Zubeen Garg expected to arrive in Assam tonight, Guwahati Traffic Police have announced extensive traffic regulations to manage the movement of vehicles and ensure a smooth tribute process.

Authorities confirmed that Garg’s body will be brought from Singapore via Delhi on an Air India flight. After arrival at LGBI Airport, his mortal remains will be taken to his residence at Bhagaduttapur for family members to pay their respects, before being placed at Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex for the public to offer tributes.

To accommodate the large number of people expected, police have imposed restrictions from 6 am to 11 pm on September 21. All commercial goods vehicles will be barred from plying on NH-27 and NH-17 until further notice. Visitors to the sports complex will have to alight at Rongmon Point on NH-27 and enter through Gate 1A, exiting via Gate 3 after paying homage. No vehicles will be allowed inside the sports complex, except for essential, emergency and media vehicles, which can enter through Gate 1C and park near the Indoor Stadium. The service road of NH-27 between Lokhra Underbridge and Nalapara will remain a no-vehicle zone. Emergency vehicles, including ambulances, fire tenders, school buses, and those carrying life-saving drugs or oxygen, will not face restrictions.

Public parking has been arranged at multiple locations to ease congestion. From the Khanapara side, parking will be available at Lokhra Bihutoli, Mahindra Tractor Stockyard on Sagalpara Road, Cycle Track at Saukuchi, Bathowpuri Bodo HS School near ISBT, Bodo Sahitya Sabha near ISBT, BC Jain Parking on NH-27, Ganesh Kata on NH-27, Moina Parijat on NH-27, and Swahid Nyas Field, including Boragaon Road. From the Jalukbari side, parking facilities include Basistha Mandir Path, GMC Parking at Khanapara, ISBT Khanapara, Greenwood Resort, ADR Parking on Kali Mandir Road, Pinku Parking on NH-27, Inland Water Transport Parking on Kali Mandir Road, Balaji Parking near ISBT, and Sonkuchi Sonali Sangha Field at Sagalpara Road. Separate arrangements have also been made for government vehicles, with parking spaces designated at Dakhin Guwahati Jr. College, Hockey Stadium Road and Hockey Stadium, while police vehicles will be parked at Old NH Parking and New Tamuli on Kali Mandir Road.

Considering Zubeen Garg’s immense popularity, authorities expect heavy crowds at LGBI Airport, along the route to Bhagaduttapur, and at the sports complex. Police have appealed to citizens to follow the traffic advisories and cooperate with security personnel to ensure a safe and peaceful farewell for the 52-year-old artist, who died in Singapore on September 19 following a swimming-related incident.
