Hot summer weather returns this weekend with record-breaking temperatures expected!

Mornings will feel refreshing and fog patches may form overnight, but after they clear, the weekend is set to be sunny, dry and summery. According to a forecast from HungaroMet Nonprofit Zrt. sent to MTI on Thursday, daytime temperatures will slowly rise, reaching between 26 and 32 degrees Celsius by Sunday.

Summer makes a comeback: brace for extreme temperatures

On Friday, skies remained mostly clear over the south-western half of the country, while the north-east and east experienced occasional cloud cover alongside sunshine, but no precipitation. The predominantly westerly airflow stayed generally weak or moderate. By the afternoon, some areas saw temperatures climb to 32 degrees. No surprise, then, that Időkép described the weather as more reminiscent of July than September. Here’s a heat map from yesterday afternoon:

Saturday will bring clear skies and sunshine after morning fog patches dissipate, with no rainfall expected. Winds from the south and south-east will pick up in the northern Transdanubia, with strong gusts possible around Sopron. Early morning lows will range from 8 to 16 degrees, while highs will peak between 25 and 30 degrees.

According to the Hungarian News Agency, the Saturday will be sunny and clear. Southerly winds in the northwest. Lows will be between 10-16 °C, while highs between 26-31 °C.

Sunday will continue in similar fashion, with clear, sunny and dry weather following the dissipation of early fog. South-easterly and southerly winds will increase in strength in the northern Transdanubia and southern Great Plain, and could be particularly strong near Sopron. Morning temperatures are forecast between 10 and 18 degrees, while highs will reach between 26 and 32.

Record-breaking heat possible on Monday

According to Időkép, similar conditions are expected on Monday. An anticyclone and warm air will dominate the Carpathian Basin, pushing temperatures above 30 degrees in many areas, potentially reaching 32 to 33 degrees in the south. Experts at Időkép believe there’s even a chance of breaking a more than 20-year-old record: on 22 September 2003, HungaroMet recorded 32.7 degrees in Máza, Baranya County.

The early mornings will also be mild, with temperatures rarely dropping below 10 degrees – even in Zabars, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, one of Hungary’s coldest locations.

Additionally, Monday marks a seasonal milestone: this year, 22 September is the autumn equinox, officially beginning the astronomical autumn.

Changes coming from Tuesday

It appears the weather will follow suit. From Tuesday, the anticyclone over Hungary is expected to weaken, offering some relief for those sensitive to extreme daytime temperature swings.

Meteorologists predict that a cold vortex will arrive in the latter half of next week. This will bring cooler weather and below-average temperatures — so it’ll be time to pull out jumpers, coats and perhaps even scarves and hats for those who feel the cold easily. It’s also wise to grab an umbrella, as the dry spell will likely come to an end.

By Thursday, most areas will see maximum temperatures fall below 20 degrees, with summer conditions lingering only in the south-east. By Friday, even these warmer pockets are expected to cool, and temperatures will exceed 20 degrees only in a few spots across Transdanubia.
