The West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) has launched a Statewide talent hunt to appoint party spokespersons, a move aimed at reaching out to the youth and reviving the party’s political prospects ahead of the Assembly elections.

Under the initiative titled Mukhapatra Sandhan, participants have been advised to send video and audio files to the WBPCC Media Department. A committee of the party will screen the applications received.

West Bengal Pradesh Congress president Subhankar Sarkar, along with several leaders, has uploaded video messages urging the youth to participate.

“As per the directions of AICC and media department of the Congress party in our State this talent hunt is a new opportunity to look for latent, look for spokespersons. If you want to raise voice against the injustice by the State government and the Central government, you will need a microphone and a platform and the Congress party is giving you the platform,” Mr. Sarkar posted on social media.

Senior leaders such as Abhijit Mukherjee, Deepa Dasmunshi, and Pradip Bhattacharya have also released video messages calling on young people to join the initiative. Participants have been directed to upload Google forms in different languages.

Pawan Khera, who heads the media and publicity department of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), also highlighted the initiative on social media.

“In India’s Cultural Capital, West Bengal Congress is all set to pioneer change. The path breaking talent hunt for spokespersons in the State – #MukhapatraSandhan is your stage, if you embody: 1. The Spirit of the Congress 2. The commitment to Truth 3. The sharpness of thought. Step forward and own your space. If you’re committed to Congress, we’re committed to your dream of a progressive, inclusive and peaceful State,” Mr. Khera wrote.

The move comes at a time when the party’s vote share has declined significantly in West Bengal. While the Congress has no representation in the State Assembly, it retained the Malda Dakshin Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 general election. Its vote share fell to 5% in the last elections.

The Congress had allied with the Trinamool Congress in 2011 to oust the Left Front, which had been in power for 34 years. Since 2016, it has entered into electoral tie-ups with the CPI(M)-led Left Front but without notable success. Recently, economist and social activist Prasenjit Bose joined the Congress party.
