The Institute of Economics and Peace (IEP) has published the 19th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI). It covers 163 independent States and territories in terms of peacefulness, or 99.7% of the world’s population. Tajikistan was ranked 79th in the ranking.
According to the authors, the situation in the world is deteriorating due to the increasing militarization of countries, an increase in the number of conflicts, the collapse of traditional alliances and increasing economic uncertainty. But individually, some countries have improvements.
Who is the most peaceful?
To measure the level of peace, 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators covering 3 areas are used:
– the level of public safety and security;
– the scale of current internal and international conflicts;
– the degree of militarization.
The higher the index, the less peaceful the country is.
Iceland (1,095), Ireland (1,260), New Zealand (1,282), Austria (1,294) and Switzerland (1,294) are among the TOP 5 most peaceful countries.
At the end of the list were Sudan (3,323), Ukraine (3,434) and Russia (3,441). But if in Sudan the indicators improved on 2 indicators, then in Ukraine and Russia they worsened on 3 and 2 indicators, respectively.
Tajikistan is ranked 79th, sharing it with the Dominican Republic. Our index is 1.996. Kazakhstan ranked 56th with an index of 1.875, Uzbekistan at 67 (1.926), Kyrgyzstan at 78 (1.988) and Turkmenistan at 87 (2.019).
For each of these countries, the indicators have increased slightly, and for Tajikistan, they have increased by 10 indicators, which is higher than for the rest of the Central Asian countries.
There is less peacefulness
The GPI of 2025 shows that the level of peacefulness in the world continues to decline, and many key factors leading up to major conflicts have reached their highest levels since the end of World War II.
Currently, there are 59 active conflicts between states in the world, the largest number since the Second World War and 3 more conflicts than last year. In 2024, 17 countries recorded more than 1,000 conflict-related deaths.

“Successful conflict resolution is at its lowest level in the last 50 years. The share of conflicts that ended in a decisive victory for one of the parties decreased from 49% in the 1970s to 9% in the 2010s, and the share of conflicts that ended in peace agreements decreased from 23% to 4% over the same period.
Conflicts are also becoming more internationalized, which makes their resolution more difficult: 78 countries are involved in conflicts beyond their borders. This increase in engagement is due to geopolitical fragmentation, increasing competition between the leading powers, and the growing influence of middle-level states that are becoming more active in their regions,” – the authors write.
The results of 2025 showed that the average level of global peacefulness decreased by 0.36%. This is the 13th decrease in the peacefulness index over the past 17 years: 74 countries have seen an improvement, while 87 have seen a deterioration in the situation.
The report also provides data on ongoing domestic and international conflicts, public security, and militarization.
