Police in Luganville have collected over VT1 million in fines and seized 83 trucks during the third phase of a joint traffic operation held last week.
The operation was aimed at ensuring that all vehicles comply with traffic laws and road safety standards. Commander of Traffic, Edward Kalura, said the checks revealed widespread non-compliance, with many trucks failing basic roadworthiness tests.
“Some vehicles had problems with wheels, while others had expired roadworthy certificates. When we checked properly, we found many vehicles not complying with the law,” he said.
Kalura noted that most fines issued were above VT10,000, reflecting a rise compared to Phase 2 of the operation in June. The most common violations were illegal tinted glass and unroadworthy conditions.
“For private vehicles, all windows must be clear. The roadworthiness paper states that tinted glass in front is not allowed, though the back is permitted,” Kalura explained. With the number of trucks on Santo roads increasing daily, police say another major traffic operation is planned before the end of the year to maintain safety and compliance
