“20vt Mama No More?” Public Raises Concern Over Rising Prices

The days of the “VT20 Mama” seem to be long gone, as prices at most nakamals and markets around Port Vila now start at VT100 and upwards.

The “VT20 Mama” has long been a symbol of hardworking women supporting their families in Vanuatu, once selling small meals, kava food,  for just VT20. But today, many say the name no longer makes sense as prices have changed with the times.

Regular customers at nakamals and markets say the rising cost is hitting families hard. “We know everything has gone up, but for families with little money, it’s tough when even small food portions now start at VT100,” one man told VBTC News.

Market vendors themselves admit they are also struggling. “Before, VT20 was enough for a small portion, but now rice, meat, and transport costs have all gone up. We have no choice but to raise prices,” one mother said.

Another vendor noted that the name “VT20 Mama” remains part of their identity, even if prices are no longer the same. “It’s who we are, but now VT20 can’t even buy one cabbage. Times have changed,” she said.

One kava drinker told VBTC News: “We understand costs are high, but for low-income families, it’s hard when even small snacks start at 100 vatu.”

Experts say the shift reflects wider economic pressures, with food, fuel, and transport costs all rising. But the change also makes life harder for those who depend on the small, affordable portions that “VT20 Mama” once stood for.

Despite this, many continue to support the vendors, knowing that higher prices reflect the broader cost of living.

VBTC News attempted to get comments from the Port Vila Municipality Environmental Health Department, but no response was provided at this time.

Now the question remains whether the name “VT20 Mama” will live on as part of Vanuatu’s history and a symbol of women’s resilience or fade away in the face of today’s changing economy.
