HOPE MILLS, N.C. (WNCN) — A man is facing charges after a firefighter was hit by a car in Cumberland County Thursday afternoon, deputies said.

According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, the Pearce’s Mill Fire Department responded to a gas leak in the area of Legion Road in Hope Mills. Due to the gas leak, they closed Legion Road at Ireland Drive.

At around 3:30 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office, a man identified as 26-year-old Ramon Bonilla-Soto Jr. of Fayetteville was ordered by a firefighter not to drive on Legion Road. Soto ignored the firefighter and attempted to cross the median, which resulted in him hitting the firefighter with his car.

Deputies said the firefighter was not seriously hurt.

Bonilla-Soto is charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, careless and reckless driving, driving over the concrete media, and failure to obey a traffic control officer, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies said Bonilla-Soto is being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center under $40,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to make his first appearance in Cumberland County Court on Friday afternoon.
