‘Have faith, we can win’, Borg tells supporters in first speech

In a rousing first speech as PN leader on Sunday, Alex Borg urged supporters to have courage, unite, and believe that this is their moment to win.

“We must believe that this is our moment when we can unite, become stronger and win,” he told a crowd of supporters.

“This is our moment for our party and our country. This is the moment for all who are of good faith to join us to build a better Malta and Gozo.”

A cheerful atmosphere filled the entrance and reception area of the PN headquarters in Pieta in the morning as supporters gathered to celebrate the election of their new leader, less than eight hours after the young Gozitan MP emerged victorious over former leader Adrian Delia by just 44 votes.

The crowd buzzed with enthusiasm, a feeling Borg would later echo in his speech.

In his first address Borg reiterated most of what he said ealier during his first interview on NET TV, promising to build an inclusive party that opens its doors to everyone of good faith.

In his first address he then insisted that the old political divisions were a thing of the past.

“Gone are the times of blue and red. Gone are the times of ‘us and them’. This is the moment for all Maltese and Gozitan people.”

He also pledged to work alongside Adrian Delia to renew the party and move forward. He expressed gratitude to Delia and his team, saying that together they had “stirred newfound enthusiasm in the party that we hadn’t experienced for many years”.

Reaching out to those who did not vote for him, Borg said, “I want you with me. Let’s join to unite – to build one party, for the nation, for all people.”

The party’s top guns all seemed to be there for Borg’s first address, including former leader Bernard Grech. But Adrian Delia was not present.

‘Labour’s worst fear’

“Labour’s worst fear is that we unite, and this is why Robert Abela might call an early election. Because he’s worried that we might have a united party that could win,” Borg said.

Borg also thanked his predecessor, Bernard Grech, for his “service and loyalty” and for “putting the party before himself”.

He concluded by thanking his family and his partner, Sarah Bajada, for their support during the campaign.

“Let’s work to make the PN the natural home of all people. Have faith!” he told supporters.
