Weather Tidbits: The 2025 Hurricane Season Outlook

This edition of Weather Tidbits will be discussing the 2025 Hurricane Seasonal Outlook from the National Hurricane Center, also known as the NHC. The NHC predicts an above-normal season with tropical activity, though not as active as last year. They are calling for 13-19 named storms. They are predicting 6–10 of these storms to be hurricanes, and 3-5 of them could be major hurricanes. A major hurricane is category 3 or higher. Some factors included in the forecast are the anticipation of ENSO-neutral conditions, meaning that neither El Niño nor La Niña are expected this season. Though weaker overall wind shear is still anticipated, which favors tropical development. Sea surface temperatures are above average, though not as warm as last year. Warmer sea surface temperatures also favor tropical development. Finally, the West African Monsoon is expected to have higher activity this season. West Africa is where tropical waves originate.
