MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — With Labor Day marking the unofficial end of summer, families across West Michigan headed to the beach Monday to soak up one last day in the sun.
“We’re coming here to swim for maybe our last time at the beach,” said 6-year-old Kellen Rowe, who spent the day swimming, having a picnic and playing in the sand with his family. “It’s a little warm still, but it’s turning cold… I wish summer could keep going.”

For his grandma, Deb Gelderloos, this summer has been all about family.
“We just want to pack in all the memories,” Delderloos said. “It’s been a great summer with a lot of memories with family and friends.”

Not far down the beach, the Kuiper family wrapped up summer the way they always do: together.
“Our family joins together on the arms of Muskegon here almost every Saturday,” Daryl Kuiper said. “It’s just a great place to view the world and see the beauty of Muskegon.”

For Kuiper and his family and friends, it is difficult to say goodbye to summer, but they are grateful for the memories they made. For their last hurrah, they grilled some burgers and squeezed the last bit of fun out of summer on the boat. From splashes in the lake to family traditions on the sand, this Labor Day was the perfect way to end the season.
“Changing of seasons is always beautiful, but you can’t beat boating in West Michigan,” Kuiper said.
