Abinader inaugurates energy infrastructure projects in Pedernales

Pedernales.- President Luis Abinader inaugurated the expansion of the 138 kV Juancho-Los Cocos substation, the new 138 kV Pedernales substation, and the 138 kV Juancho-Pedernales transmission line, projects built by the Dominican Electric Transmission Company (ETED) with an investment exceeding RD$971 million. The works will integrate Pedernales into the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI) for the first time in over five decades, ensuring a more reliable and stable electric service to meet growing energy demands driven by tourism and development in the area.

The new infrastructure includes state-of-the-art equipment such as fiber-optic-equipped 138 kV line fields, SCADA-controlled protection and telecommunications systems, transformers, and civil works including control booths, access roads, and drainage systems. Additionally, Edesur added a 10 MVA transformer and a medium-voltage network spanning 21 kilometers to strengthen distribution, with a separate investment of RD$170 million.

The 61.33-kilometer Juancho-Pedernales transmission line, built with double-circuit technology and 196 galvanized steel towers, is designed for a 30-year lifespan and can withstand winds up to 200 km/h. ETED highlighted that these developments not only resolve a historical energy deficit in Pedernales but also support the province’s tourism, industrial, and social growth, aligning with the 2030 National Development Strategy and ensuring robust infrastructure to sustain future economic initiatives such as the Cabo Rojo Tourism Development Plan.
