MIDDLEBOROUGH, Mass. (WLNE) — The Middleborough Fire Department is investigating the cause of a fatal Monday morning fire on Everett Street.

The fire, which left a 91-year-old woman dead, was reported at approximately 2:52 a.m. Monday according to Middleborough Fire Department Chief Owen Thompson.

Arriving fire crews were met with heavy fire in the two-story, multi-family home as flames showed through multiple windows on the first floor.

The conditions prompted a second alarm and additional personnel were called to the scene.

According to Chief Thompson, firefighters entered the building and located the 91-year-old woman who was not able to escape the house.

She was pronounced deceased at the scene, and there were no other injuries in the incident.

The fire was attacked aggressively by on-scene firefighters, and the flames were knocked down within 30 minutes, according to Chief Thompson.

Raynham, Bridgewater, Lakeville and Carver Fire Department personnel provided mutual aid.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Middleborough Fire Department, Fire Marshal’s office state police personnel and Massachusetts State Police detectives with the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office.
