SOUTH HADLEY – With a multitude of offensive weapons led by Adelaide Jordan, the top-seeded East Longmeadow girls lacrosse team defeated No. 2 West Springfield, 18-8, in the Western Massachusetts Class A championship on Wednesday night.
The Spartans (14-5) have now won consecutive sectional championships.
“They are fast, gritty,” East Longmeadow coach Katie Moses said. “Tough as nails. The energy they bring and their willingness to fight and play aggressively. That’s the difference maker with this group.”
Five different players scored multiple goals for the Spartans.
“If you want to shut down one of our offensive threats,” Moses said. “We have another to throw at you. We have a lot of girls who can score.”
Jordan set the tone, scoring 12 seconds into the game. She finished with six goals. Marina Calabrese and McKenna Witwer added three goals each.
“That’s our hidden secret,” Jordan said. “Maybe the stats aren’t super even across the board, but realistically, every girl on the field can show up and contribute when needed. It creates such a great support system on the field.
“Everybody is rooting for one another.”
Jordan is in her fourth season playing lacrosse for the Spartans.
“I got the opportunity to play all four years on four amazing teams,” Jordan said. “The last two, it means so much because it’s really a credit to our hard work and our effort off the field.
“Our team environment is unlike any other. I’m so grateful to play with this group of girls.”
The Spartans will enter the Division II state tournament as the seventh seed and earned a first-round bye.
“Every game could be our last,” Jordan said. “Going forward with that mentality and just putting your heart out on the field every game, that’s what we need to do going forward.”
East Longmeadow reached the state semifinal round before losing to Walpole last season. East Longmeadow will now return to the practice field, with some areas needing improvement heading into the tournament.
“Sealing off cutters,” Moses said. “Communication on defense. Just being a little cleaner with our play.
West Springfield (14-5) is the 13th seed in the D-II state tournament field. The Terriers will play No. 20 Dartmouth High School in the Round of 32.
“It’s great to play a team like this going into the state tournament,” West Springfield coach Joe Canata said. “It makes you work a little harder in practice. Correct the little mistakes that you make. Some of the fundamental things you talk about. ”
This was the third loss of the season to the Spartans for the Terriers.
“They are very talented,” Canata said. “They are well-coached, they have some great players over there. Division one players.”
Darby Poe presented a lot of problems for the Spartans’ defense, scoring seven goals for the Terriers. Poe has seen a lot of the Spartans this season.
“They (East Longmeadow) have a lot of good players who are their core,” Poe said. “We faced them twice this year, so this was our third time this year. So we know how they play and everything. That makes playing them harder when you keep going against the same team. In the state tournament, it will be nice to have fresh faces.”
The Spartans had a 3-2 lead with 6 minutes and 3 seconds left in the first quarter before three straight goals gave them a comfortable lead heading into the second. Calabrese, Witwer, and Jordan each scored to close out the first quarter.
The Spartans pulled away in the second quarter and went into halftime with a 15-4 lead.
Sabina Mackechnie had two impressive goals for the Spartans. On both plays, the junior singlehandedly blazed down the field and through the West Side defense to find the net.
Freshman Kylie Marino added a fourth-quarter goal for the Spartans.
Angelina Truoiolo added two goals, with Caroline Lukasik adding another for the Spartans. Calleigh Johnson also scored for the Terriers.
Olivia Davis made 12 saves in net for the Terriers. Jenna Hawley stopped 10 shots for the Spartans.
