Man in custody after domestic incident in Lowell

A 42-year-old man is in custody after beating up his ex-girlfriend and barricading himself in her Lowell home late Tuesday morning.

The woman’s roommate at around 11:20 a.m. May 27 returned to their home in the 1700 block of Westwood Drive and found her beaten up, Lake County Sheriff’s Department Spokeswoman Pam Jones told the Post-Tribune Tuesday night. The roommate — a 57-year-old man — suspected the woman’s ex-boyfriend was responsible, Jones said.

The roommate called dispatch and said the woman’s ex was shooting off a handgun while walking away from the area, Jones said, but as officers arrived, the ex had returned to the home and barricaded himself inside. The Lake County Tactical Unit was called to the scene, and the man was arrested and will be charged.

The woman, 40, refused medical transport, and a gun was confiscated, Jones said. Police are still investigating.
