A half-day training workshop themed “The Rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Its Impact on Journalism” was held on Tuesday in Nairobi, Kenya. The event was organized by Xinhua News Agency Africa Regional Bureau and brought together nearly 100 participants, including editors and news reporters from more than 10 media outlets across Africa. The training was conducted in a hybrid format, combining in-person and virtual participation.
The workshop highlighted how AI is reshaping the media landscape. Participants were taken through Xinhua News Agency’s adoption of AI across its news production pipeline. The agency demonstrated how AI is integrated into news gathering, research, editing, and dissemination, showing the practical ways technology supports efficiency and accuracy in reporting.
In a virtual keynote address, Dr. Chen Yingying, Associate Professor at the School of Journalism and Communication at Renmin University of China, encouraged African media professionals to embrace AI tools. She outlined the benefits of AI, including faster news processing, enhanced data analysis, and wider audience reach. At the same time, she cautioned that AI adoption presents challenges such as ethical concerns, misinformation risks, and the need for regulatory frameworks.
Dr. Chen emphasized that while AI cannot replace human journalists, it can serve as a powerful tool to enhance productivity, fact-checking, and content delivery. She urged media houses to invest in training and innovation to remain competitive in an evolving digital environment.
Participants engaged in discussions on how African newsrooms can adapt AI in a way that preserves journalistic integrity and strengthens public trust. The session also explored strategies for building digital resilience, particularly in combating disinformation and safeguarding editorial independence.
The Nairobi workshop reflects growing recognition across the continent of AI’s role in shaping the future of journalism. By adopting AI-driven solutions, African media organizations can improve efficiency, expand coverage, and meet the demands of fast-changing news consumption patterns while ensuring responsible use of emerging technologies.
