Tanna Youth Take the Lead in Building Climate Resilience

The youth of Vanuatu are not just inheriting the challenges of climate change—they are taking the lead in tackling them. Across Tanna, young people are embracing climate awareness, combining intergenerational knowledge with modern tools to strengthen resilience in their communities.

This growing movement was clearly visible at the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD) booth in Lenakel, where more than half of the visitors during the recent outreach were young people, ranging from primary school students to university learners.

Among them was Year 12 student Young Beckham from Kuataparen Village. Inspired by his mother’s participation in a weather observation training in Luganville, Beckham came to the VMGD booth determined to learn more. He had already downloaded the Climate Watch App on his smartphone, showing how young people are merging kastom knowledge with technology to safeguard their villages.

The booth also proved meaningful for Patricia, an Environmental Science student at the Vanuatu National University. Passionate about pursuing a career in climate science, she said the opportunity to connect with VMGD staff reinforced her decision. Access to such information and mentorship is helping inspire the next generation of climate professionals.

The growing enthusiasm from young leaders like Beckham and Patricia reflects a broader shift: Vanuatu’s youth are no longer waiting for solutions but are actively seeking tools and knowledge to prepare for a changing environment. Their involvement demonstrates the importance of empowering communities from the ground up to build resilience.

According to VanKIRAP Project Manager, Moirah Matou, initiatives like the Climate Watch App and planting calendars play a key role in bridging traditional knowledge with science. This approach not only strengthens climate adaptation but also fosters informed decision-making within communities.

The initiative is part of the Vanuatu Klaemet Infomesen blong Redy, Adapt mo Protekt (VanKIRAP) project, with funding support from the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
