Medical Education and Raichur district in-charge Minister Sharan Prakash R. Patil on Monday told the Legislative Council here on Monday that a thorough inquiry will be conducted into the deaths of infants and mothers at the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) Hospital.
Responding to a query by Congress member M. Nagaraj regarding the increasing number of maternal and neo-natal deaths in BIMS and the shortage of doctors there, the Minister said that officials have been directed to audit the deaths and submit a detailed report.
“There are several reasons behind these deaths. People come to BIMS from far away villages. Many cases involve high-risk pregnancies. A comprehensive investigation has been ordered and a report has been sought,” he said.
Stating that the upgradation of BIMS into a super-specialty hospital has almost been completed, he said that it has not been inaugurated yet. Eight super-specialists have been hired on contract basis and they are currently serving in the hospital.
