Road to Olsobip becomes reality after 50 Years

Western Province Governor Taboi Awi Yoto has hailed the completion of the long-awaited road link to Olsobip Station, describing it as a historic milestone that brings long-denied hope to the people after five decades of nationhood and nearly 41 years of mining operations in neighbouring Tabubil.

Governor Yoto said the achievement was made possible through a collective effort involving the National Government, Ok Tedi Mining Limited Tax Credit Scheme (OTMLTCS), the North Fly District Development Authority (NFDDA), local leaders, and landowners who allowed the road to pass through their customary lands.

“Finally, hope reaches Olsobip Station after 50 years of our nationhood and almost 41 years of mining operation in the neighbouring tribal lands of Tabubil,” Governor Yoto said.

He particularly acknowledged the National Government’s decision to amend laws to increase the Tax Credit Scheme ceiling, which enabled the project’s funding.

Governor Yoto commended the contractor, IPZ for successfully constructing the road in what he described as “one of the most challenging geographic landforms and weather conditions in the country.”

“We were once advised by expatriates that it was impossible to build this road, but IPZ has proven that it can be done,” he stated.

Governor Yoto also expressed his gratitude to Teleformin MP and Minister for Works and Highways, Solan Mirisim, for his behind-the-scenes support and leadership that helped bring the project to fruition.

The road to Olsobip is seen as a critical development, providing long-isolated communities with access to government services, economic opportunities, and connectivity to the wider region.
