Mombasa (WDN) – Two Somali sisters drowned on Wednesday in a swimming pool at their family’s home in Mombasa, Kenya, police confirmed.
The victims, identified as 13-year-old Ca’isha Mohamed and her 8-year-old sister Hamdi Mohamed, were reportedly on school holiday when the incident occurred.
According to Mombasa Police Commander Peter Kimani, the girls entered the pool while their father was away buying lunch for the family. He had taken three of the children with him, leaving the rest at home with their mother.
Neither Ca’isha nor Hamdi is believed to have known how to swim. They were found unresponsive in the water and rushed to hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead.
Commander Kimani said the father was informed of the tragedy by his wife while he was at a nearby hotel, prompting him to return home immediately.
Relatives and neighbors gathered at the family home to offer condolences. Similar drowning incidents involving Somali nationals have been reported in Mombasa in the past.
Police have urged parents and guardians to closely supervise children during school holidays to prevent such tragedies.
