An NYPD squad car struck two pedestrians Monday afternoon while trying to avoid a collision with a Manhattan taxi, officials said.
The wild crash unfolded around 4:09 p.m. as a 63-year-old man and 74-year-old woman were sitting at an outdoor dining area near Broadway and W. 112 St. in Morningside Heights, police said.
At the same time, the NYPD squad car — with three officers inside along with a 32-year-old man — was heading north on Broadway, its lights on and siren blasting, when it tried to veer away from a taxi heading south on Broadway and trying to make a left on W. 112 st., cops said. As the NYPD car swerved away from the taxi, it hit the couple sitting on outdoor dining chairs, cops said.
Everyone in the squad car and the two outdoor diners were rushed to St. Lukes Hospital; all were listed in stable condition, cops said.
It was unclear if the officers were responding to a call when the incident occurred; an investigation is underway, authorities said.
The taxi driver was given a summons or failure to yield.
