French experts to help restore Georgia’s national clothing

With the support of the Georgian Ministry of Culture, in cooperation with the National Museum and Project Georgian Infusion, French specialists in the field of conservation and restoration visited Tbilisi. They will familiarize themselves with the collections of national clothing archives.

Notably, the specialists will carry out a detailed inventory and develop technical and research plans necessary for the restoration of damaged exhibits.

The Ministry of Culture of Georgia shared the glimpses of their visit on its official Facebook Page on August 12, 2025. The Ministry also shared some information related to the visit, along with its glimpses.

According to the information shared by the Georgian Culture Ministry, it should be noted that the first stage of the project will determine the quality of damage to the parts and elements of national clothing. The next stage will be the restoration of clothes, after which a permanent exhibition will be organized in the National Museum of Georgia.

Deputy Minister of Culture of Georgia Giorgi Mirtschulava got acquainted with the process of determining and evaluating the damage of exhibits by French and Georgian experts at the National Museum.

Unique samples of Georgian traditional clothes and fabrics require prior restoration, conservation, and scientific description, because a significant part of the exhibits date from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. National Museum employees, ethnographers, restorers, and curators are involved in this process.

The restoration plan will be compiled by Anastasia Ozolin, the main restorer of the Paris Museum, Palais Galliera.

The project plans to create a garment restoration and educational workshop on the basis of the National Museum, which will, at the same time, be a professional development center and train textile and traditional garments restorers. Trained specialists will practice in the National Museum and will be employed in the workshop.
