First US-ROK summit to test Lee Jae-myung’s ability to defend trade gains and navigate Trump’s likely defense demands
ROK President Lee Jae-myung will travel to Washington later this month for his first in-person summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, the presidential office said Tuesday. The official working visit will take place from Aug. 24 to 26, with the summit scheduled for Aug. 25 at the White House.
The two leaders are expected to discuss a wide range of issues, including alliance coordination on North Korea, combined defense posture and economic cooperation in semiconductors, batteries, shipbuilding, advanced technologies and critical minerals. The two sides will also seek to solidify the July 31 tariff deal that saw South Korea agree to invest $350 billion in the U.S. in exchange for reduced reciprocal tariffs.
