Abandoned Meyuns home destroyed in afternoon blaze

KOROR, Palau — An abandoned house in Meyuns burned to the ground Tuesday afternoon in a fast-moving fire near Kalau Gym, authorities said.

Police Director Curtis Elobt said the blaze was reported at 4:16 p.m. by community members. “The incident took place at around 4:16 p.m. The fire was reported by community members,” he said, adding that the property belonged to Nizimura Remoket and had been vacant for about two years.

A neighbor said the former occupants had moved to the United States. “The house has been abandoned for about two years,” she said. “It could be the wires from the house that caused the fire somehow, for the house had been abandoned for a long time.”

Elobt said two fire trucks were sent to extinguish the blaze. “The house unfortunately burnt down quickly, for it was an old abandoned house,” he said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
