Police surrounded one of Norwegian welfare agency NAV’s offices in Oslo on Friday, after a man walked into it and fired two shots. No one was injured but the situation was dangerous and employees were scared.
Police operations leader Svein Arild Jørundland told reporters that the man, described as a “client” of the welfare agency, entered the NAV job center’s first floor, pulled out a pistol and fired twice. Police arrived quickly and “gained control” over the man and his weapon before driving him to the main police station.
NAV is the state agency that handles everything from Norwegians’ pensions and sick leave compensation to unemployment and welfare assistance. The office where the shooting occurred in Oslo’s Bislett/St Hanshaugen neighbourhood also offers help in finding jobs.
“The employees are upset after this, and both police officers and health care workers are there to help them,” Jørundland said, adding that no one was wounded by the shots or otherwise physically injured.
