Man charged in Raleigh I-40 shootings deemed incapable to stand trial: Court filing

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The suspect charged in connection with a series of shootings on Interstate 40 last November has been deemed incapable to stand trial by a Wake County judge, a court filing shows.

Superior Court Judge Douglas Green found 24-year-old Andrew Thomas Graney of Raleigh incapable of standing trial and ordered him to be committed to Central Regional Hospital, according to court documents.

The commitment order issued by Green said the reason for this decision comes after a doctor found Graney has “inadequately treated schizophrenia”. It also said Graney had repeatedly harmed himself while in custody.

Court documents show Graney has been housed in a mental health unit inside Central Prison for close to two months. He was moved there due to his behavior at the Wake County Detention Center and his behavior was “so unstable that Central Prison will not transport him back to the detention in order to serve him with new charges”.

The documents detail a series of struggles with mental health, including suicide attempts and perpetual self-harm.

Graney underwent multiple psychiatric evaluations since being arrested last November, leading to the recommendation he be committed to a hospital for treatment.

According to the commitment order, Graney will be “restored to capacity” once he receives treatment for his mental illness that is considered optimal.

Graney, a senior at North Carolina State University. was arrested in connection with 12 shootings along I-40 in Raleigh over a four-day period. Several vehicles and homes were struck by gunfire, with one injury reported.
