Trump Claims He ‘Most Likely’ Will Not Fire Fed Chair Jerome Powell

President Donald Trump claimed Friday he “most likely” will not fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, despite persistently goading him to leave his post.

“I would remove him in a heartbeat, but they say it would disturb the market, and he gets out in seven or eight months and I’ll put somebody else in,” Trump said in an interview with Newsmax’s Rob Finnerty.

Powell, who Trump nominated to lead the central bank in 2017, will see his term as chairman end in May 2026. Any attempt by Trump to remove Powell without cause would immediately trigger a legal firestorm, as the Supreme Court has ruled that the Fed chair is legally protected from presidential removal.

“It’s very disruptive if you fire, so I would say most likely, yeah,” Trump responded when asked by Finnerty if Powell would stay in the role.

The president also repeated his criticism of the Federal Reserve building’s renovation, claiming the project is “way over budget.”

“It’s almost like he’s building a palace for himself, but he’s not going to be there much longer anyway,” Trump told Finnerty. “That’s the good news. He’ll never get to use it.”

Despite Trump’s claims that he won’t try to remove Powell, he has indicated to Republican lawmakers that he plans to do otherwise. He also spent Friday afternoon continuing his war of words against the Fed chair, using Federal Reserve Governor Adriana Kugler’s early resignation to further pressure Powell.

″‘Too Late’ Powell should resign, just like Adriana Kugler, a Biden Appointee, resigned,” Trump posted on social media. “She knew he was doing the wrong thing on Interest Rates. He should resign, also!”
