Cooper Smoragiewicz booted a 19-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining to complete a comeback for second-seeded Summit as it rallied from a 14-point second quarter deficit en route to a 24-21 over seventh-seeded Warren Hills in the quarterfinal round of the NJSIAA/Xfinity North Jersey Section 2, Group 3 Tournament in Summit.
Summit’s victory advances it to the sectional semifinals where it will host third-seeded West Essex, winners against sixth-seeded Mendham by a 24-6 margin in its quarterfinal matchup.
Warren Hills opened the scoring on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Cohl Stevens to Dom D’Aconti to take Warren Hills to a 7-0 first quarter lead before the teams combined for five scores in the second quarter.
Stevens connected with Mehki Garrett from 18 yards out to double Warren Hills’ margin at the 9:57 mark of the second before Summit found the end zone twice in less than three minutes of game time.
Matt McKeever plunged in from one yard out 51 seconds following Garrett’s touchdown to cut Summit’s deficit in half. A Ben Cohen interception set up a short field for Summit to take advantage of to the tune of 22-yard touchdown pass from McKeever to Connor Gawronski at the 7:14 mark.
D’Aconti and Alex Schwark traded touchdown runs of 25 yard and 1 yard respectively before halftime while the teams played a scoreless second half until Smoragiewicz’s game-winning field goal for Summit (8-2).
Reece Schott was a perfect 3-for-3 on extra points for Warren Hills (5-5).
