SEWARD, Neb. (KLKN) — The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4755 in Seward is getting the community involved for Memorial Day.
“It’s just a day to reflect and to remember,” said Marty Walter, a member of the VFW Post 4755. “To honor and celebrate what they did for us in their ultimate sacrifice.”
Around 30 people helped clean and place American flags on every fallen soldier’s grave at the Greenwood and Seward cemeteries.
Each one held a special plaque, reading the branch that the soldier served in.
“With the flags, it’s certainly a reminder of why we’re out there,” said Erich Neujahr, a member of the VFW Post 4755. “For Seward specifically, each flag is set out for a person, a specific person. If you go out to the cemetery, you’ll notice a name on the flags.”
On Saturday, the VFW passed out poppies, a symbol of remembering.
For people like Vicki Luebbe, getting involved for Memorial Day hits close to home.
“I have a son and a daughter,” she said. “My daughter just retired. My son was in 25 years, as a Warrant Officer. My daughter was a captain. They were all in the Army. I now have a son-in-law who is also in the Army, so yes it’s a lot for me.”
The weekend was full of gratitude, as several people stopped to say ‘thank you’ for their service, and pick up a poppy.
Luebbe, Neujahr and Walter took the time to explain what each poppy meant.
Walter said the Seward community really showed out, and would proudly wear the poppy after stopping by.
“It’s pretty special. To see the community come out the way that they do,” he said. “It’s an honor to have them work alongside us, when they don’t need to. They choose to and it’s really cool.”
The Seward VFW will be holding a ceremony on Memorial Day to honor the fallen soldiers and pay their respects.
