CT softball umpire accused of sexually assaulting juvenile players

A Fairfield man is facing sexual assault charges after he was accused of inappropriate touching juvenile players during two games where he was working as a softball umpire.

John Simone, 65, was recently arrested and charged with seven counts of fourth-degree sexual assault and seven counts of risk of injury to a minor, according to the Meriden Police Department.

The Meriden Police Department said it received a complaint in July about an umpire who was allegedly touching several juvenile softball players inappropriately over the course of two separate softball games.

The Special Crimes Unit was able to review game footage after a search warrant was granted and also conducted several interviews, according to police.

The umpire was identified as Simone, police said. Basic on the information obtained during the investigation, the department requested and was granted three separate arrest warrants, one for each of the alleged victims.

According to police, Simone was taken into custody by the Danbury Police Department on Oct. 23 following an unrelated traffic stop.

Simone was then transported to the Meriden Police Department, where he was processed and released after posting court-set surety bonds totaling $90,000. He is scheduled to appear in court in Meriden on Nov. 7.

”The Meriden Police Department is wholeheartedly committed to protecting victims of sexual assault,” the department said in a release on Thursday. “We understand the impact of these crimes, and we partner with agencies to help provide services to the affected victims and their families. It is the policy of the Meriden Police Department to fully investigate every allegation of crimes against victims that are brought to the attention of our organization.”
