Two Atlanta rappers with ties find their way to Hartford this week on consecutive nights.
The more established of the two, Playboi Carti, is at the newly renovated PeoplesBank Arena (recently known as the XL Center). He has had two albums hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts, the other one hit No. 3, plus he’s featured on records by everyone from Kanye West to Travis Scott to Lana Del Rey.
The other visiting artist from the long-thriving highly influential rap scene is Benji Blue Bills, known for his deft mix of classic and cutting-edge hip-hop styles. He’s at The Webster the night before Playboi Carti’s show.
Playboi Carti referenced Benji Blue Bills on “Different Day” and “UR the Moon,” raising the younger rapper’s profile through the feud. Benji Blue Bills answered Playboi Carti with “Im Right Here” and other tracks. The disses extend to larger groups: Benji Blue Bills is associated with Henxhmen, rivals to Homixide, both names that are associated with the underground Atlanta rap scene and Atlanta street gangs.
It’s also a good week in Connecticut arts to explore cult bands like The Replacements (in documentary and cover band form), Biohazard (live with its classic lineup) and Trivium (with a new drummer).
