Man arrested on suspicion of double attempted rapes in Latvia / Article

The Latvian State Police (VP) together with the Ādaži Municipality Police on October 29th detained a man who is suspected of attempting to rape two women.

A criminal case has been initiated and the police are calling on anyone else who may have been a victim of the man’s criminal activities to come forward.

A few hours later, Ādaži municipality police officers noticed a man in the area who matched the description of the attacker and arrested him. The detainee was born in 1963 and has previously been convicted of similar crimes.

Both stolen phones were also found in the forest.

In connection with the incident, two criminal proceedings have been initiated for attempted rape and petty theft. If convicted, the law provides for imprisonment for a period of four to ten years and probation supervision for a period of up to five years for rape or attempted rape. Petty theft is punishable by imprisonment for a period of up to one year, or by probation supervision, or by community service, or by a fine.

The police suspect that the detained person, who has not been named but has had his photograph released, may also be involved in criminal offenses against other individuals. Law enforcement officers are calling on residents to view the man’s photos and to report anyone who has been a victim of his criminal activities by calling 20269280 or 112.
