Melbourne has honoured the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete with a series of deeply emotional commemorations over the weekend, paying tribute to those who fought and died on Cretan soil in 1941.

The events, organised by the Battle of Crete and Rest of Greece Memorial Council, brought together members of the Greek-Australian community, Australian authorities, veterans, descendants of ANZAC forces, and the wider public in scenes of remembrance, gratitude and pride.

The commemorations concluded on Sunday with a memorial service, Divine Liturgy and wreath-laying at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation ‘Axion Estin’ in Melbourne’s north, where a solemn atmosphere filled the church as Greek and Australian flags framed the sanctuary.

On Saturday, tributes began at the Shrine of Remembrance, where representatives of community organisations, military officials, veterans and descendants gathered to honour the fallen. A second ceremony followed at the nearby Hellenic-Australian Memorial, reinforcing the enduring bonds forged between Greece and Australia during the Second World War.

The weekend of remembrance followed a formal ANZAC commemorative reception held on Friday night at the Cretan Brotherhood of Melbourne, which marked the opening of the anniversary program. The event was jointly organised with the Cretan Brotherhood and the Pancretan Association of Melbourne, under the auspices of the Pancretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand.

Among those present were Bishop Evmenios, Greek Consul General in Melbourne Dimitra Georgantzoglou, and a delegation from Greece led by Air Vice-Marshal Konstantinos Bouzos. Victorian Government representation was provided by MP Kat Theophanous, while the Australian Defence Force was represented by Lieutenant Minwoo Lee.

A particularly moving moment came with the recognition of Robert Winther for his decades of service to Australia’s veteran community and his dedication to preserving the memory of the Greek Campaign and the Battle of Crete. His work was highlighted by Antonis Tsourdalakis, drawing strong emotion from those in attendance.

Organisers noted Winther’s contribution to the creation of key memorial spaces, including ANZAC remembrance sites, and his more than 40 years of involvement in commemorative events, which was met with prolonged applause.

The cultural program added a vibrant dimension to the commemorations, with the children’s dance group of the Cretan Brotherhood of Victoria performing traditional Cretan dances in colourful costume, earning enthusiastic applause and symbolising the passing of memory to younger generations.

Musical performances by renowned Cretan artists Manolis Kontaros, Kyriakos Kontekas, Michalis Georgvasakis and Stelios Papadakis filled the hall with traditional lyra and lute music, evoking nostalgia, pride and emotional connection to heritage.

The official program concluded with traditional dancing and the exchange of commemorative gifts, before the evening continued in a spirit of music, reflection and community celebration.

Once again, Melbourne’s Greek community demonstrated that the memory of the Battle of Crete remains a powerful and unifying force, honouring sacrifice while strengthening the enduring bond between Greece and Australia.
