November the 1st, 2025 – Life has become much more expensive for the majority over the last few years, and many residents of EU countries are only just making ends meet, but how does Croatia stand in that regard?
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, according to data for 2024, as many as 60% of households across Croatia have some difficulty meeting basic monthly expenses such as utilities, rent and food and are quite literally just making ends meet.
This puts Croatia well above the European Union (EU) average in this regard, which stands at 42%.
At the top of the list of countries where residents have the most difficulty making ends meet is nearby Greece, where as many as 86% of households have problems covering even their most basic of expenses. Bulgaria follows with 77%, while Slovakia (66%) and Romania (65%) all share third place.
On the other hand, the lowest percentage of households that have difficulty making ends meet has been recorded in Germany (18%) and the Netherlands (19%), while Luxembourg (24%), Sweden (25%) and Finland (28%) are among the most stable of all.
It’s worth noting that Croatia has been dealing with spiralling inflation, with the cost of food and other basic needs in particular increasing constantly. Bizarrely, while inflation for items like food is set to calm down next year across the rest of the Eurozone, the opposite is predicted for Croatia, where it is predicted to continue to grow throughout 2026.
It remains to be seen whether or not the powers that be will place price caps on more basic food and household items in Croatia in the near future as more and more people slip below the poverty line.
