Pa. crowned the U.S.’s safest state for seniors

This is quite the honor!

Pennsylvania has been deemed as the number one safest state for seniors by a new report.

Conducted and published by RetirementLiving, the reported graded each state cross four main categories: “Crime,” “Climate safety,” “Health care access,” and “Traffic safety.” Pennsylvania — being number one and all — got stellar marks with the exception being “Health care,” under which it ranked 31st overall.

“The safest state for seniors in our 2025 study is Pennsylvania, which earned top 20 safety scores in all but one major category,” the report elaborates. “Pennsylvania performed especially well in two categories in particular: crime and climate.

“Elder abuse is relatively uncommon in Pennsylvania, which sees just 7.5 reported incidents per 100,000 seniors in the state. The Keystone State ranks fourth overall in climate safety, thanks to moderate temperatures throughout the year. Pennsylvania’s enhanced state hazard mitigation plan ensures that if extreme climate events impact state residents, a Federal Emergency Management Agency [FEMA]-approved plan is in place to minimize the damage.”

The study adds: “In addition to being a a safe place to spend your golden years, Pennsylvania is relatively close to several major metropolitan areas, like New York City. That means seniors can enjoy the peace and serenity the state has to offer while having easy access to big city excitement when the mood strikes.”

Nevada, on the other hand, was found to be the riskiest state for older people. The state highlights how elder abuse here “is especially worrisome, with 247.6 reported incidents per 100,000 seniors — the worst in the country.”

“Climate is also a serious concern for seniors in Nevada,” the report notes. “The average summer high temperature of 92 is the third highest of any state, posing a significant risk of heat stroke and other exposure-related illnesses. Winters can also be a problem, with an average low temperature of 28.’
