Following the partial collapse of a ceiling section at Zagreb’s popular Dolac Market, trading will temporarily move to European Square (Europski trg), city officials have announced.

Zagrebački Holding confirmed on Friday that its Markets Zagreb branch has decided to relocate sales activities from Dolac’s upper level as a precautionary measure, HRT writes.

“Market stalls from the open area at Dolac will be moved to European Square. All traders will be directly informed about the relocation details,” the statement said.

The move comes after falling plaster from part of the ceiling prompted the closure of Dolac’s indoor hall earlier this week.

Experts have since highlighted the need to remove the remaining plaster and address moisture seeping from the upper level of the market structure.

Marin Rončević, head of Markets Zagreb, said the decision to close and inspect both the indoor hall and the upper level was based on safety concerns.

“An inspection has confirmed that the decision to close the indoor area was correct. Since the moisture is penetrating from above, we decided to examine the upper surface as well. The safety of our traders and citizens is our top priority,” Rončević explained.

The relocation is a temporary measure. If investigations show that only minor construction work is needed, Dolac Market could reopen within a few weeks.

Until then, trading activities will continue at European Square “to the greatest possible extent,” Rončević added, encouraging citizens to keep supporting local vendors in their new location.

The last major renovation at Dolac took place in 2015, and independent of the recent incident, Markets Zagreb has already begun preparatory work for a comprehensive refurbishment of the city’s central market.

Sales at European Square will begin on Monday, 3 November, following Dolac Market’s regular opening hours.
